Stephen A. Smith, DVM, PhD

Professor of infectious diseases of aquatic, wildlife and exotic animals, Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology

Dr. Stephen A. Smith is a professor of infectious diseases of aquatic, wildlife and exotic animals in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Pathobiology in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech.  Dr. Smith received his B.S., M.S. and D.V.M. from The Ohio State University and his Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. In addition to being an author of over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and the author of the book entitled An Atlas of Avian Radiographic Anatomy, he has published numerous book chapters and has served as Editor and Issue Editor for several journals. His research interests include diseases and pathology of finfish and invertebrates, fish immunology and hematology, and the pharmacokinetics of drugs in food fish.  He is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine, the American Association of Fish Veterinarians, the Fish Health Section of the American Fisheries Society and the European Association of Fish Pathologists. He has served on the ILAR Committee of the National Academy of Sciences, the Aquatic Veterinary Medicine Committee of the AVMA, the Animal Welfare Committee of the AVMA, is a past president of the International Association for Aquatic Animal Medicine, is a past president of the American Association of Fish Veterinarians, is a past member and Chair of the IACUC of Virginia Tech, and is also the current Attending Veterinarian for Radford University.  He recently served as chair of the aquatics section for both the AVMA Panel on Humane Slaughter of Animals and the AVMA Panel on Depopulation.
